Environment Art Edge decals

Edge decal can pop out that boring looking hard edge to life by giving it that realism. We can also just add Chamfer and make those edge look smooth, but still that nature look with irregularities and damage miss out. Edge decal will rescue at that time. I used 3ds max for modelling, Zbrush for adding damage and Substance painter for overlaying some procedural noise and height. And previewed inside  Unreal Engine 4.

1.Make a simple concrete pillar, make sure the proportion are right. 

 2.Create geo for our edge decal by inserting edge loop and detaching those polygon.

 3.Now give them single smoothing group. This will improve our shaping once we apply Decal texture.

 4.Now apply push modifier to avoid z-fighting so both pillar and edge decal geometry don’t overlap each other.

5.Export pillar into zbrush. Add support loop for better subdivision.

 6.Used clay tube and trim dynamics brush to add damage. Just lower the brush size and intensity.

 7. Now for Baking, delete the top and bottom polygon also give it single smoothing group.

 8. We need to have single UV island so we can use it properly with edge decal.

9. Baked result inside Substance Painter

10. Also added some noise and height to add more rough look, Now export the maps. In this case we only need normal map.

11. I painted created alpha map for edge mesh for mask inside Photoshop by just painting white over normal map details and black in flat areas where there are no details.

12.Now I unwrapped edge mesh and laid out UVs according to alpha mask so only edge damaged details from normal map will be visible.

Concrete Material Setup :-
Used Texture from internet for concrete diffuse. I also created 2nd UV channel inside Pillar UV to create dirt/grime mask.
